Talk at Yale Macmillan Center

Although I retired from teaching at BU at the end of the fall semester, I continue to be active.  I am now a Visiting Fellow at the Schuman Center of the European University Institute in Florence.

I gave a talk online April 9, 2024, for the Yale Macmillan Center’s European Studies Council in their series: Rethinking Democracy in and for the European Union. My talk was entitled “The Future of Democracy in the EU: From the Eurozone Crisis to the Covid 19 Crisis and Beyond.” This was the fourth in their series. In my remarks I focused on problems the EU has long faced on questions of legitimacy, in particular with the responses to the Eurozone crisis, but also how these were partially (and temporarily) attenuated as a result of responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. The discussion was moderated by Samuel Moyn, Professor of Law at Yale University, and joined by another speaker, Michael Wilkinson, Professor of Law at the LSE.
