The Rise of Populism: Geopolitical Consequences

On April 1 of this year, I gave a virtual talk for the Geopolitics Institute at the ESCP Business School in Paris on the geopolitical consequences of populism. I discussed the rise of populism, and the ways in which the ‘4M’s’ of populism (message, messenger, medium, and milieu) help us understand the phenomenon. I also talked about how populists in the US and Europe may (or may not) threaten the tenets of liberal democracy, with some tempering their populism once in power, others doubling-down on it with a drift toward authoritarianism.
