Trump and the Far Right in Europe, Asset or Liability? It Depends.

I was extensively interviewed by Portuguese journalist Hélder Gomes on the impact of Trump and his policies on extreme right leaders and parties in Europe. The full article, in Portuguese, can be found here. To summarize, I argue that Trump’s pro-Russia stance causes problems for some extreme right parties (especially Meloni) but not others (Orban, for example, and the front-runner in the Romanian elections). Trump’s tariffs are a problem for all such parties, but they generally have remained quiet about them, taking a wait and see attitude. Meanwhile, his anti-immigration policies have been widely embraced.
